Though renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common form of kidney cancer, non-clear cell renal cell carcinoma (nccRCC) only accounts for about 25% of all RCC cases and remains underrepresented in clinical research and education. Its complexity – with multiple rare histologic subtypes and widely varying treatment responses – requires specialized, nuanced, and up-to-date guidance for clinicians on the front lines of care, which is exactly what The France Foundation (TFF) and the Kidney Cancer Association (KCA) have developed in “Advancing Care in Non-Clear Cell RCC.”
Designed for oncology and urology health care professionals, this initiative provides insights into optimizing patient selection, improving diagnostic accuracy, and managing treatment-related adverse events. The program was created to help clinicians struggling to integrate new immunotherapies manage complex side effects and make patient-centered decisions based on the distinct features of each nccRCC subtype. Expert faculty Pedro Barata (MD, MSc, FACP) and Sumanta K. Pal (MD, FASCO) compare clinical trial data on current and emerging uses of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), and combination ICI/TKI therapy, as well as discuss the rationale for combination therapies and treatment sequencing strategies in nccRCC.

The Kidney Cancer Association has been a beacon for patients and providers since its founding in 1990, growing from a small group of patients and doctors in Chicago, Illinois, to become an international non-profit furthering scientific advancements, legislative advocacy, and education for patients and caregivers alike. This program is a natural extension of its vision to be the universal leader in finding a cure for kidney cancer. Together, we’re charting the way forward for continued nccRCC education.
