The France Foundation Is Accelerating Learning in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, From Emerging Science to Clinical Practice

When it comes to rare diseases, scientific innovation often moves faster than a clinician can find their footing. As new therapies become available, health care professionals must quickly understand the mechanisms of action, interpret emerging evidence, and determine how novel treatments fit into increasingly complex standards of care. Continuing education (CE) plays a critical role in closing that gap, transforming new science into practical knowledge that clinicians can confidently apply for patients. That was the goal behind New Pathways and Possibilities in the Treatment of DMD, an initiative developed by The France Foundation (TFF) to help neurologists and neuromuscular specialists navigate one of the most rapidly evolving areas of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD): the role of histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity in disease progression and the emergence of HDAC inhibition as a new therapeutic strategy.

New Pathways and Possibilities in the Treatment of DMD was designed to help clinicians understand the underlying science, evaluate new clinical evidence, and integrate emerging therapies into multidisciplinary patient care. Within 6 months, the program achieved over 100% of its learner goal, reaching thousands of health care professionals involved in the care of patients with DMD. Achieving full participation well before the planned conclusion demonstrates both the strong demand for timely education in DMD and The France Foundation's ability to connect our programs with the clinicians who need them most.

Addressing a Critical Educational Gap

Although advances in DMD treatment have accelerated dramatically, many clinicians had limited exposure during their medical training to the biological role of histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity and its relevance to disease progression. At the same time, newly approved and emerging therapies have introduced novel mechanisms of action that require clinicians to rethink how treatments are selected, combined, and integrated into existing standards of care.

We designed an educational experience that addressed these challenges by teaching providers how to interpret the latest clinical evidence supporting new and emerging DMD therapies and helping them understand the role of HDAC activity in muscle degeneration, inflammation, adipogenesis, and fibrogenesis. These clinicians learned how to apply real-world strategies for integrating novel treatment approaches alongside established therapies, thereby improving their patients’ outcomes overall.

Combating Rare Diseases by Reaching Learners Where They Are

It’s uniquely challenging to develop rare disease education; specialists are geographically dispersed, patient populations are small, and new evidence can emerge rapidly. Our team has a history of success in this area, and we excel at maximizing access to information through a blended educational strategy.

In the context of this program, we expanded the program's reach while preserving opportunities for interactive discussion, practical application, and reinforcement of key concepts. The result was an initiative that achieved its learner participation goals months ahead of schedule, serving the needs of the neuromuscular community with timely precision. Our team connected clinicians with education they needed to confidently adopt the emerging science by combining evidence-based content, interactive educational design, strategic dissemination, and a deep understanding of the rare disease landscape.

As therapeutic innovation continues across rare and neuromuscular diseases, so too does the need for education that helps clinicians translate discovery into better patient care. Programs like this demonstrate how thoughtfully designed continuing education can accelerate that process, reaching clinicians sooner, supporting practice change earlier, and ultimately helping improve care for patients living with complex, evolving conditions.
