The France Foundation to Deliver Education on REMS Program for Extended-Release and Long-Acting Opioid Analgesics

OLD LYME, CT — JANUARY 24, 2014 — The France Foundation, along with the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), FSMB Foundation, and CECity have been awarded a grant to educate health care providers on the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) for extended-release and long-acting (ER/LA) opioid analgesics set forth by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This program will be dedicated to offering both live and online education meeting criteria set forth by the FDA for the ER/LA opioid REMS. The grant was awarded by the REMS Program Companies (RPC), a consortium of opioid manufacturers responsible to the FDA.

Over the next year, The France Foundation will work with the collaborators on the project to allocate 25 grants to state medical boards who will work with their unique state partners to educate ER/LA opioid prescribers in their states on responsible ER/LA opioid prescribing. Additionally, a series of 6 online modules are planned to allow for self-directed learning which also will meet the requirements set forth by the FDA. Through these strategic educational opportunities UNMC, The France Foundation, FSMB, and CECity expect to provide this valuable information to over 8,700 ER/LA opioid prescribers.

"Prescription drug abuse and misuse is a growing problem in the United States and The France Foundation’s role in this project allows us to make a difference by educating clinicians on the importance of effective and responsible opioid prescribing." said Ted Bruno, MD, Chief Medical Officer at The France Foundation.
