Advancing Timely Diagnosis of Systemic Sclerosis

In the ever-evolving field of rheumatology, systemic sclerosis (SSc) continues to challenge even the most experienced clinicians. According to recent studies, up to 2.4 years may pass between a patient’s first symptoms and formal SSc diagnosis. For a disease where early intervention can mean the difference between stability and irreversible damage, that’s a gap medical education cannot ignore.

That’s why our team at The France Foundation (TFF) launched "Spotlight on SSc: Pathophysiology, Presentation, & Emerging Evidence," an educational initiative designed to close persistent knowledge gaps, support timely diagnosis, and empower rheumatologists to provide guideline-aligned, multidisciplinary care.

Clinicians caring for patients with systemic sclerosis face an intricate web of clinical challenges, from subtle early signs that delay diagnosis to the management of life-threatening complications such as interstitial lung disease (ILD), pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and scleroderma renal crisis (SRC). Even with updated guidelines, practice patterns remain inconsistent, and the absence of definitive biomarkers adds another layer of complexity.

We designed this initiative to reflect the realities of rheumatologists by grounding the content in real-world case scenarios and the latest clinical evidence. With it, learners are better equipped to:

  • Describe the mechanisms of SSc pathogenesis, with a focus on the vasculopathy-fibrosis axis and its relationship to clinical features and disease progression
  • Apply diagnostic strategies that enable early, accurate identification of SSc and its phenotypic variants
  • Interpret and act on emerging clinical trial data, incorporating new therapies and multidisciplinary care models into their approach

SSc’s unpredictable course, diagnostic complexity, and multisystem impact have made it one of the most difficult autoimmune diseases to identify and manage early. At TFF, we’re using our expertise in autoimmune and fibrosing ILD education to create innovative, outcomes-driven programming that resonates with learners.

Our mission is clear: to equip the rheumatology community with the tools, knowledge, and confidence they need to improve patient outcomes in SSc. We're proud to lead this initiative, and we’re just getting started. If you share a vision for improving autoimmune care, this is an invitation to join us as we advance systemic sclerosis education, one clinician, one patient, and one meaningful change at a time.
