Alison G. Freifeld, MD, FIDSA, is Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Section of Infectious Diseases; and Director, Immunocompromised Host Infectious Diseases Program at University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), in Omaha. Dr. Freifeld is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine and holds a subspecialty certification in Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Freifeld received her bachelor's degree at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She obtained her medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, Maryland in 1982, and remained there until 1985 as a resident in the Department of Internal Medicine. Following a fellowship in Infectious Diseases at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, Maryland, Dr. Freifeld proceeded to the National Cancer Institute, where she held several positions, including Chief of Clinical Infectious Diseases Service, until her move to UNMC in 2000.
Dr. Freifeld is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, where she chairs the Fever and Neutropenia Guidelines and Histoplasmosis Guidelines Committees, and a member of the American Society for Transplantation. She is also currently a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network's Myeloid Growth Factors Committee, and sits on the steering committee of the Infections in Cancer National Consortium. Dr. Freifeld has published 50 peer-reviewed articles in such journals as Journal of Clinical Oncology, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, and Clinical Infectious Diseases. She serves as principal investigator for the Investigation of the Natural History of West Nile Virus Infection in Patients With or At Risk for Progression to West Nile Virus Encephalitis and/or Myelitis trial.
