Educational Need
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects 8.3 million people in the United States. According to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), 700,000 patients with CKD suffer from severely reduced kidney function or end-stage kidney failure. Many of these patients suffer from disorders of bone and mineral metabolism, including secondary hyperparathyroidism (sHPT), disorders of calcium and phosphorus metabolism, and soft tissue and vascular calcification. Alarmingly, the NKF predicts the number of patients with sHPT will double by 2010.
Recent research has identified new approaches for managing the progression of sHPT. This educational initiative will discuss therapeutic options for sHPT, and provide forums to critically analyze the latest information with leaders in the field. These interactive sessions will consist of presentations and discussion intended to help nephrologists and other health care practitioners to better manage their patients with CKD and improve patient outcomes.
