CRESCENT is an educational initiative designed to provide health care professionals with continuing medical education to increase the understanding of the physiology, pathophysiology, and treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism (sHPT) in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD).
This educational activity is sponsored by The France Foundation, and is supported by an educational donation provided by Amgen.
Educational Need
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects 8.3 million people in the United States. According to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), 700,000 patients with CKD suffer from severely reduced kidney function or end-stage kidney failure. Among those, 300,000 require chronic maintenance hemodialysis, and 70,000 new patients enter dialysis programs each year. Additionally, a majority of these patients suffer from disorders of bone and mineral metabolism, including secondary hyperparathyroidism (sHPT), disorders of calcium and phosphorus metabolism, and soft tissue and vascular calcification. Alarmingly, the NKF predicts the number of patients with sHPT will double by 2010.
CKD, with the frequent complication of sHPT, thus represents a major medical problem in the US. Recent research has identified new approaches for managing the progression of sHPT. The CRESCENT initiative will present these new findings to renal dietitians and other health care practitioners who care for patients with CKD. This educational activity will provide dietitians with information to better manage patients with CKD and improve outcomes.
Target Audience
This educational activity is intended for registered dietitians involved in the care of patients with CKD.
Educational Activity Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, the participants should be able to:
- Describe the physiology of PTH and mineral metabolism in patients with CKD
- Discuss the available therapies for the disorders of PTH and mineral metabolism in patients with CKD
- Apply this information to the clinical management of patients with CKD
CPE Statement
This program has been approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration for 1.5 CPEU. Clinicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
